Vulva & Intimate Area

External hygiene, discharge-related questions, odor, irritation, dryness and product choices.

Make sense of the problem

What matters before you choose a solution

External vulvar care and vaginal symptoms need to be separated. The vulva is external skin; the vagina is internal and self-cleaning. Odor, discharge, itching, burning and dryness can overlap, so the pattern and accompanying changes matter.

Real-life example

If you notice a stronger smell after a workout but no other change, sweat and damp clothing may be relevant. If the odor is new and comes with changed discharge, itching or pain, simply washing more is not the same as solving the cause.

Intimate CareWhy Do My Underwear Smell by the End of the Day?

A mild change in underwear scent by the end of a long or sweaty day can come from normal sweat, discharge, small urine leaks, menstrual fluid or odor held in fabric. A new strong or unpleasant odor—especially with unusual discharge, itching, burning, pain or bleeding—deserves a different response than ordinary laundry or sweat odor.

Private QuestionsWhy Are My Underwear Always Damp?

Damp underwear can come from normal vaginal discharge, sweat around the groin, small urine leaks, menstrual fluid or a combination. The useful question is not just “how do I stay dry?” but “what kind of moisture is this, when does it happen, and did anything else change?”

Intimate CareWhy Can Vaginal Discharge Look Yellow After It Dries?

Normal clear or white discharge can look different once it dries on fabric. A faint cream or yellowish dried mark is not enough on its own to identify an infection. What matters more is whether fresh discharge has changed colour, smell or texture and whether you also have itching, soreness, pain, bleeding or urinary symptoms.

Private QuestionsWhy Does Discharge Leave Pale or Bleached-Looking Marks on Underwear?

Some people notice lighter or “bleached-looking” patches in dark underwear where discharge repeatedly dries. The mark itself is not a reliable test for vaginal pH, infection or health. Focus instead on whether the discharge and symptoms are normal for you.

Sweat, Odor & MoistureWhy Does My Intimate Area Smell Stronger After a Workout?

After exercise, stronger smell around the groin is often related to sweat and damp clothing. But a new vaginal odor that persists after washing and changing—especially with unusual discharge, itching, burning or pain—should not automatically be blamed on sweat.

Intimate CareHow Should I Wash My Vulva?

Keep intimate washing simple: clean the external vulvar skin gently with water; if you use a cleanser, choose a mild, fragrance-free option and stop if it irritates you. The vagina is internal and does not need douching or routine internal washing.

Personal Care & HygieneDo I Need Feminine Wash or Intimate Wash?

You do not need a special “feminine wash” to keep the vagina clean. If you like using a cleanser on external vulvar skin, keep it mild and fragrance-free and stop if it causes dryness, stinging or itching. Internal washes and douches are not recommended for routine hygiene.

Periods & Menstrual HealthWhy Does My Pad Make Me Itchy or Sore?

Pads can irritate skin through friction, trapped moisture, adhesive/edge rubbing or sensitivity to fragrance or materials. Change pads regularly, choose an unscented option, keep the external area dry and stop using a product that clearly worsens irritation. Persistent or severe itching is not always “pad rash.”

Periods & Menstrual HealthHow Often Should You Change a Period Pad?

Change a pad before it becomes saturated, leaks, smells strongly or feels wet and uncomfortable. Flow varies through the day, so the right interval changes too. During heavier flow you may need to change much sooner than during a light day. Follow the product instructions and do not extend wear simply to save pads if the pad is soaked.

Growing Up & PubertyIs White Discharge Before Your First Period Normal?

Clear or white discharge can begin during puberty before the first period and is often a normal part of hormonal development. It should not usually have a strong unpleasant smell or cause significant itching, soreness or pain.

PregnancyWhy Is There More Vaginal Discharge During Pregnancy?

It is common to have more vaginal discharge during pregnancy. Healthy pregnancy discharge is often thin, clear or milky white and should not have an unpleasant smell. Changes in smell or colour, itching/soreness, pain when urinating, fluid you think could be waters, or any vaginal bleeding should be discussed with maternity care.

Perimenopause & MenopauseVaginal Dryness Around Menopause: What Can Help?

Vaginal and vulvar dryness can occur around perimenopause and menopause as estrogen levels change. Avoid perfumed soaps and douches, use a suitable vaginal moisturiser or water-based lubricant if appropriate, and talk to a clinician if symptoms persist or affect daily life or sex; prescription options such as vaginal estrogen may be considered for some people.

Underwear & Clothing ComfortCan Workout Clothes Cause Groin or Vulvar Irritation?

Tight, sweaty workout clothing can increase heat, moisture and friction around the groin and external vulva. Changing soon after exercise, using breathable underwear and reducing seam pressure can help. Persistent itching, unusual discharge, sores or burning should not be blamed on leggings alone.

Personal Care & HygieneHow Long Should You Stay in a Wet Swimsuit?

You do not need to panic about a few minutes in a wet swimsuit, but changing into dry clothing when you are finished swimming reduces prolonged moisture and friction against the groin. If itching, unusual discharge, burning or odor persists, do not keep assuming the swimsuit is the only cause.

Intimate CareVulvar Itching After a New Soap, Wipe or Product

If itching started soon after a new soap, wipe, detergent, pad, lubricant or intimate product, stop the new product and simplify your routine. External skin can react to fragrance and other ingredients. Persistent itching, unusual discharge, sores, pain or swelling needs assessment because irritation is not the only possible cause.

Periods & Menstrual HealthWhy Does My Period Smell Different?

Menstrual blood can have a noticeable metallic or musty scent, and odor can become stronger when blood sits in a pad or mixes with sweat. Change saturated products, wash external skin gently and use clean underwear. A strong new unpleasant odor with unusual discharge, pain, itching or fever needs assessment.

Intimate CareIs It Okay to Wear Panty Liners Every Day?

A liner can be convenient for occasional discharge or spotting, but wearing one continuously is not automatically necessary for hygiene. If it makes you hotter, damp, itchy or sore, change the product or take breaks; if you need liners because discharge or leakage has newly changed, address that reason rather than only covering it.

Intimate CareHow Should You Wash Your Intimate Area After a Workout?

After a sweaty workout, change out of damp clothing and gently rinse or wash the external vulvar/groin skin as needed. You do not need to clean inside the vagina, douche, scrub or use scented “feminine hygiene” products.

Periods & Menstrual HealthCan You Shower or Bathe During Your Period?

Yes. You can shower or bathe during your period. Menstruation does not make bathing unsafe; wash your body normally, keep intimate cleansing external and use a fresh period product afterward if you need one.

Personal Care & HygieneCould Laundry Detergent Be Irritating My Skin or Underwear Area?

If itching or redness began after changing detergent, fabric softener or scent booster—and follows areas covered by clothing—it is reasonable to simplify laundry products and see whether the pattern improves. That does not prove the detergent is the cause, and intimate symptoms such as unusual discharge or sores need a different evaluation.

Growing Up & PubertyDo You Need to Remove Pubic Hair for Hygiene?

No. You do not need to shave, wax or remove pubic hair to be hygienic. Wash the external groin/vulvar area gently, keep clothing reasonably clean and dry, and only remove hair if you personally want to—hair removal can itself cause cuts, irritation and ingrown hairs.
